7/25/15 Phlocking of the Phaithful Update:

Hey Phlockers!
Sunshine Cindy and I hope all of our friends are having a great summer enjoying sandy beaches, boat drinks, salt air and trop rock music! We have started the planning for the 2016 “Phlocking of the Phaithful” in Put in Bay, Ohio!

“22nd Annual Phlocking of the Phaithful”
Mark your calendars for the “22nd Annual Phlocking of the Phaithful.” It will be Thursday June 9th through Sunday June 12th 2016. Sunshine Cindy and I are planning the biggest and best North Coast trop rock event yet. Musicians are being contacted…Great raffle prizes are being discussed…The logo is being designed…Concoctions are being consumed in large quantities during this planning….Yep, we are hard at work already! LOL  You won’t want to miss this trop rock party. Registration will open in mid to late August so be watching for all the details!!!

Halfway to the Phlocking
Dan and Patty are getting the details worked out for next winters “Halfway to the Phlocking.” It will be held January 29 -30, 2016 at The Commodore Perry Inn in Port Clinton, Ohio. Room rates have not been set yet but they should be reasonable like previous years ($50-70 range). The entertainment is still being booked and I will announce it as soon as it is finalized. “Halfway” is always a great way to warm up those cold winter days up north.

Mr. Ed’s
As most of you know, Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grill is the primary sponsor of “Phlocking of the Phaithful” and is also our host location. We can’t thank Ed and his staff enough for all the support they provide to us. It allows “Phlocking” to be the fun event that is still going strong after 21 years.

Here is a little history…Mr. Ed's was originally established in Put in Bay in 1997 as a small hometown pub offering friendly staff, quick service, great food, inexpensive prices and great entertainment. From that humble beginning Ed grew his business over the years into a regional conglomerate which now includes the following businesses:
• Mr. Ed’s, Put in Bay
• Commodore Resort, Put in Bay
• Mist at Put in Bay
• Victory Station Hotel, Put in Bay
• Golf Cart Depot, Put in Bay
• Mr. Ed's, Port Clinton
• Commodore Perry Inn, Port Clinton
• Dock's Beach House, Port Clinton
• Beachfront Resort, Port Clinton

Hard work is in the DNA of Ed and his staff. We have seen it up close during “Phlocking.” Sunshine Cindy and I applaud anyone that puts in the effort to grow a business and make it successful. Ed has done that. The next time you are in Put in Bay, stop by Mr. Ed’s, have a drink and some food and thank Ed for all he does for “Phlocking” as well as the local economy. A lot of folks are employed because of the Mr. Ed’s family of businesses.

Monday May 11th Living and Playing in Destin Blog:
A Destin party weekend

This past weekend was special. Sunshine Cindy and I celebrated our first year anniversary. It’s hard to believe it has been an entire year already since we had that wonderful day on the harbor with our friends and family.

To celebrate I got us a condo (with a lot of help from Carlos at Crab Island Cantina) at the Emerald Grande in Harborwalk Village. This is where we stayed last year and I wanted us to be able to enjoy coming back to the scene of the crime. LOL  We got there Friday afternoon and got checked in. We had a balcony room overlooking the pool. It was nice. We enjoyed the view as we unpacked and then decided to head to McGuire’s for Happy Hour and some dinner.

We walked over to McGuire’s. Walking through the parking lot a car pulled up behind us and a lady hollered at us. It was our friend Robbie. We all talked in the parking lot for a while catching up. We have not seen Robbie in several months and it was great talking with her. Our drinks and food were good as usual at McGuire’s. We got there before the dinner rush but by the time we left there was a line waiting to get in. We headed to Crab Island Cantina where we met up with Mark, Stephanie and Julie. Carlos was there so we got to thank him in person for helping with the room. Mike was behind the bar and we all had a fun time.

The others left but Sunshine Cindy and I walked down to the Boathouse. We ran into Maynard there. Jason Clark was playing some good country tunes. A big crowd was there. We made a few more stops this evening. Harbor Shack was one stop. Then AJ’s where we ran into Mike and Terry. They told us Charlie with Crust Pizza opened a satellite shop at the entrance to AJ’s. We walked up there to hang out with him for a while. I ended up talking to some producer from L.A. who happened to be in town. Looks like Charlie has a good thing going with this location. From there we called it a night.

Saturday was a windy day. We got out about noon and hit Harry T’s for brunch. Then we stopped at Sunglass World where I bought Sunshine Cindy some cool Costa shades. Even Sunshine Cindy needs to keep the sun out of her eyes. From there our stops were Red Door Saloon, Boathouse, Harbor Shack, Crust Pizza, AJ’s and back to the Boathouse. We ran into friends every step of the way. Wayne joined us for most of the stops. We ran into Mike and Cindy on our way to AJ’s so we all stopped there. Julie joined us at the Boathouse as Rusty was playing. Then Renee and finally Kenny came by. When Rusty was finished so was I. Time to call it a night.

Sunday Sunshine Cindy and I had dinner at Brotula’s. This is the new place where Fisherman’s Wharf used to be. We had a great dinner. They do seafood and they do it right. They also did a great job remodeling the place. It is now open and airy.

The place on the harbor where Tipsy Turtle used to be is getting close to opening. Johnny O’Quigley is putting in a huge facility here. But down on the boardwalk where the Turtle was is another small bar. It’s a little larger than the Turtle. We actually talked to Johnny as he was there working on the place. He told us it’s going to be a locals spot with cheap beer and appetizers. Very similar to the Turtle just a little bigger. We told Johnny we can’t wait for it to open. He said it’s planned for June 8th. I assume he also meant the big facility will open then too. If so, they have a long way to go to be ready.

A few weeks ago I related how Sunshine Cindy and I were part of a TV pilot that was being shot in Destin by Fred McFarlin from Atlanta. Well, the trailer for Barstools and Beach Chairs is close to being released. I have seen a preview of it and I can honestly say it is outstanding. Fred is a natural in front of the camera and the guys behind the camera are true pros. And it does not hurt that Sunshine Cindy and I have small parts in it too! lol  As I hear more about if they can sell the pilot I will pass along that info.

Last week I noticed for-sale signs on the land that was supposed to become some type of Dolly Parton dinner theater. There was even a for-sale sign up in front of a bank that was permitted to be torn down. Now the Destin Log is reporting the company that had purchased the land is selling it. So it looks like no Dolly in Destin.

This is our last few days of relative quiet in Destin before the summer tourist season begins this weekend. This season has all the makings of a busy time all along the Emerald Coast. I better get ready to sit in traffic each night now. Ugh…

Have a great Memorial Holiday weekend and remember to honor our service members and the vets. They are the reason we can celebrate.

Monday May 11th Living and Playing in Destin Blog:
We love our Destin beaches

Some days are better than others and Sunshine Cindy and I had a couple of great days in Destin last weekend. It started out on Friday. We decided to go to the Back Porch seafood restaurant for Happy Hour. They have good drink prices and they were advertising a good price for boiled shrimp. The building was remodeled this past winter and it is now open and bright. We sat at the bar and enjoyed the shrimp and a couple cold beers.

When we left we decided to try and find a beach bar that is part of the Silver Shells condo complex. We walked along a grass path and found the bar. It was a tiki hut kind of place with a big deck. It sat just steps off the beach. As we walked up we recognized the bartender. Shannon used to be a manager at Sago. It was like old home week as talked about the demise of Sago. Everyone misses that place.

It was a perfect day to be sitting at the edge of the beach watching the tourist come and go while seeing the Emerald Green water. Sunshine Cindy talked to some tourist from Minnesota who had to go back the next day. That’s the good thing about living here…we don’t have to leave!

That evening there was a Parrot Head meeting at Fuds in Destin. We made it there and had a good time. JB was playing music for the group and did his usual good job. As everyone left we stayed back and talked to JB and Tami. He was relaxing before tearing down his equipment. Then a manager from Fuds told him a group of about 50 people were coming in to be on the stage to get their picture taken with some alligators. Sure enough, a few minutes later here comes a large group from toddlers to grandparents. They had a fun time holding the gators and JB even got them singing a little. We didn’t see this coming! LOL

On Saturday Sunshine Cindy and I decided we wanted to spend some more time at the beach at a beach bar. We started out at the Surf Hut in Miramar Beach. The place has a nice Polynesian feel to it. We had a beer then headed to the Crab Trap. They have an outside beach bar that we sat at. It was so nice and relaxing. A lot of different people came and went in the bar. There was a group of 5 hot young ladies from Panama having a great time. Some old Georgia redneck kept buying them shots of Tequila. It was funny watching all this.

After the sun went down we left and went to Landshark pizza for some dinner. I didn’t want to watch the hockey game thinking I might be a jinx but it was on AND there were two Montreal fans there watching the game. These two whined as much as the fans in Montreal do. They complained about every little thing….he tripped him, he interfered, he hit him in the face….whaaaaaaa…..They must teach this form of whining to all fans up there. I thought Ben should have had that last goal. It looked like a normal shot that he once again just missed. Geeze….And yes, I am whining about that! LOL

Sunday we spent Mothers Day with Sunshine Cindy’s parents. We had a good time sitting on the patio and down on the dock by the water. The weather the last week has been perfect and Sunday was no exception. I wish it would stay this way all year.

On the way to visit with her parents we drove by where the new Lulu’s is being built in Destin. This is going to be a great place very similar to the Lulu’s in Gulf Shores, AL. The building looks like it is coming along as I heard they are shooting for a late June opening. They have a big parking lot and a small bridge over a little pond to get to the building from the lot. It will be a fun place.

I also heard about a new place that is going into the old Capt. Dave’s building on the harbor. This is a big brick building that has not had much happening there since hurricane Ivan forced Capt. Dave’s out. This is going to be a restaurant and from what I can see a club too. That part of the harbor needs some more places as everyone is concentrated on the west end for the most part.

Have a great week everyone. See ya next Monday!

Musician Profile:

Mike Miller

The Trop Rock world has some of the best singer/songwriters in the world as part of our genre. Many of these musicians have been playing and honing their craft since they were very young. Mike Miller falls into that category. Mike started playing as a youngster and by the age of fifteen he was performing professionally. He learned how to play a wide variety of instruments including the drums, keyboard, trombone, guitar and bass. From that beginning Mike made music his life.

Most fans of Trop Rock music know Mike and his music from a band he co-founded, “The Boat Drunks.” Mike and Jake Tater formed the Boat Drunks in 1999. This band, that is still going strong, forged an identity with Parrot Heads as they became a staple at Meeting of the Minds each year in Key West. Mike wrote and sang lead on the Boat Drunks biggest hits. Everyone knows the songs “This Ain’t Duval Street, “Hollow Man,” Wind it Up” and “Big in Japan.” These are all songs that showcased Mike’s songwriting ability and his voice on the songs. These are definitely songs that Parrot Heads know by heart!

We are thrilled to have Mike Miller performing for us at our “21st Annual Phlocking of the Phaithful – 21 and Legal, Let the Chaos Begin” Trop Rock party in Put in Bay, Ohio. Mike will be performing solo on Friday afternoon at 4 pm and then on Saturday afternoon, also at 4 pm, we will have Mike and his band (which includes 4 members of the Boat Drunks) playing for us for a show that is guaranteed to be a fan favorite. Mike is one of the true Trop Rock pioneers. Get registered today so you can join us for Mike’s shows at Mr. Ed’s!!!!

Musician Profile:

Brent Burns

Brent is a Trop Rock superstar. Brent and his lovely wife Pam live in Gulf Shores, Alabama and we are glad to have him perform for us at Phlocking of the Phaithful. If you have never been to a Brent Burns show, you have missed hearing one of the great story tellers. Brent only does his own original music. As he has been known to say, “Jimmy Buffett does not do any of my songs and I don’t do any of his.” Brent is in good with the Buffett’s though as he plays almost every Monday at Lucy Buffett’s place, LuLu’s in Gulf Shores.

Brent has twelve CD’s of fantastic Trop Rock music. Some of the titles of Brent’s songs include; “Going Ugly Early,” “If it’s Snowbird Season, Why Can’t We Shoot Them,” and “Too Lazy to Work, Too Nervous to Steal.” Brent has sung with Ray Stevens and many other Nashville musicians. Brent is a Trop Rock legend!

Brent will be closing out Phlocking of the Phaithful performing a “Bloody Mary Morning” show on Sunday on the patio at Mr. Ed’s from 11 am to 2 pm. Relax on the patio as Brent winds down Phlocking for another year. Oh yeah guys….don’t forget your Man Card!!!

Musician Profile:

Jimmy and the Parrots

The "Jimmy" of Jimmy and the Parrots is actually two Jimmy's. Jimmy Maraventano is the lead singer and the main "Jimmy." His son, Jimmy Jr. brings a youthfulness and a backup voice that compliments his Dad's very well. The rest of the band, Hal Selzer and drummer extraordinaire Lance Hyland Stark, round out this great group. In fact one of the highlights of any show they do is their rendition of the old "Safaris" song, Wipe Out. Lance does a drum solo that is out of this world. We have seen them in Key West at MOTM where they turn the lights off and all you can see are Lance's glow in the dark drum sticks moving so fast you don't believe what you are watching. An awesome show!

As with all good Trop Rock bands, they are able to cover Jimmy Buffett's songs as well as others but what really gets their fans going is when they perform their own original songs. Their CD "Better than New" has all original songs that were all written by Jimmy Sr. Our favorite original song is called "Volunteer." It a story of a guy with extra beer and he needs some volunteers to help him drink them. As they say at the end of the song...Pick Me, Pick Me! LOL

Halfway to the Phlocking

Dan and Patty did another fantastic job with Halfway to the Phlocking. It was a big success as they were able to dodge some of the big winter storms this year. I also understand no one got their tongue stuck to a frozen light pole. Good work Phlockers! There were also two winners of a free registration to the “21st Annual Phlocking of the Phaithful – 21 and Legal, Let The CHAOS Begin”. Congratulations.

Jerry and Mary Diaz are the driving force behind the TRMA Trop Rock event of the year, Pardi Gras. Pardi Gras is actually going on in New Orleans right now. Jerry has over 500 Trop Rock fans enjoying music, parades, pub crawls and much more in the French Quarter.

Musician Profile:

Jim Asbell and the Tropiholics

“Ready, Willing and Asbell.” Trop Rock musicians are a phun group. They are all down to earth folks who happen to have musical talent. There is one band that seems to have as much phun or more than even their fans do. That band is Jim Asbell and the Tropiholics. Jim is an Atlanta based Trop Rock musician who is well known in the ATL. With Todd, Phillip and Duane filling out the Tropiholics band you have the recipe for a “Ready, Willing and Asbell” good time.

Jim has released two CD's. The first was "Tropiholics" and the second was "Man Overboard." Both CD's have original songs that are getting a lot of airtime on Trop Rock radio stations like Beachfront Radio and Songwriters Island Radio.

For many years during Meeting of the Minds, Jim and the band were mainstays at The Bull. The Bull is at the corner of Caroline St. and Duval St., right in the heart of all the action. Their shows were always one of the best parties in town with the show going till midnight or longer. This is no church crowd they draw either. It is some of the heartiest partying Parrot Heads around. The record for most alcohol sold at The Bull is from nights Jim and the band have played. That is quite impressive when you consider all the parties that are thrown in Key West during the year! Party with Jim and the band at Mr. Ed’s on Friday evening!

Put in Bay History

Put in Bay has been an important spot going all the way back to the early 1800's. Put in Bay and South Bass Island served as a base of operations for Oliver Hazard Perry. It was from the harbor that Perry sailed to defeat the British fleet under Robert H. Barclay during the war of 1812. The American victory in the battle of Lake Erie gave the country and the United States Navy a memorable slogan of, "We have met the enemy and they are ours..."

Since then Put in Bay has been a summer resort for more than 100 years. In its heyday, around the 1850s to the 1900s, several steamships, some holding up to 1,500 passengers serviced the island on a regular basis. Tourists were treated to a variety of hotels, including at that time the largest resort hotel in America featuring the first coed swimming pool. Today you find students, families and yes, even Parrotheads enjoying the laid back style of island living. It is not easy to get to but it is well worth it. Join us on the island this June!!! http://www.crabislandmambo.com/Crab-Island-Mambo-presents-Phlocking-of-the-Phaithful.html

A BIG THANK YOU to Jay Seeger for recommending  to Sam Densler of Songwriters Island Radio that they broadcast from Phlocking. We are now in the planning stages to have Songwriters Island Radio broadcast live on their radio station several of the musical acts we will present at Phlocking. How cool is that!!!! Oh yeah…Congrats to Sam for winning the TRMA for Radio Station of the Year and Sam and Gina for being honored as “Trop Rock Fans of the Year.”

MUSICIAN PROFILE:

Mike Nash

This month we are profiling Mike Nash. Mike is the founder and lead singer for Southern Drawl Band. Mike will be performing solo for us on Friday morning at Mr. Ed’s. Mike and the Southern Drawl Band burst onto the Trop Rock scene just a few short years ago. They have taken the Trop Rock world by storm. In Key West for “Meeting of the Minds” they play Margaritaville each evening. Mike was a feature performer at Pardi Gras in 2014 and the entire band will be performing at Pardi Gras in 2015.

Mike has been a lifelong fan of Jimmy Buffett’s music from his days on the Florida coast. Add to that his love of the mountains and you have a sound that combines country rock and Trop Rock to have a show that has his fans up and dancing to his music.

Southern Drawl Band has three CD’s of original music; “Another Day in Paradise,” “Against the Grain” and “Just Passin Through.” Mike wrote most of the songs on the CD’s. All three CD’s are classics with songs that are destined for national air play. Join us at Mr. Ed’s on Friday June 12th for Mike’s performance. You won’t want to miss this one!!!!

1/30/14

Parrotheads and fans of Trop Rock music are some of the most generous people in the world. “Angels in Tropical Shirts,” “Party with a Purpose,” raffles, donations…..Hundreds and thousands of dollars are donated to charity each year. There are several companies that cater to Parrotheads who donate portions of their sales to various charities.

Here at Crab Island Mambo, we take a different tact when it comes to helping our fellow American’s. We do business with American Companies that employees Americans. We buy our tee shirts from a company that makes the shirts in California. They also only use cotton grown in the US employing farmers to grow the cotton and truck drivers to move the cotton.

Made in America

Our koozies are made in the US. We then employee American’s to work on the graphics, do the artwork and finally to print the tee shirts and koozies. We sell jewelry that is made by hand here in the US. We will be adding hats and some other items in the near future. All of them will be Made in America.

Why do we do this? Because we feel it is important to keep American manufacturing alive and well. We want to see American’s employed. Crab Island Mambo wants to keep our hard earned dollars in the US. When we employ the American worker he will in turn spend money that will employ more Americans. It is our belief that most people want to work and it is more beneficial to our economy to put people to work.

Sunshine Cindy

Crab Island Mambo does what it can to help the American worker. We are a very small company but we believe we can make a difference. Please help us by considering to purchased some of our shirts and koozies. And to entice you to “Embrace the Chaos!” we have a SPECIAL OFFER! If you spend $30 or more on an order, you will receive free shipping to anywhere in the US including Alaska and Hawaii. (We might even hand deliver the order to Hawaii!!! LOL)

We hope you take us up on our special offer but with anything you buy, look at the label of origin. Many times American Made items are readily available at a competitive cost. We live in the greatest country in the world. Crab Island Mambo will do it’s small part to keep it alive and working by selling Made in America items!!!

SORRY BUT THIS TRIP WAS NOT ABLE TO GET ENOUGH SUPPORT IN THE SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME TO GUARANTEE THE RESERVATIONS.

Jerry Diaz has announced a Barefoot Cruise aboard a motorized sailboat March 17-22. You must act quickly if you wish to join in this great cruise. Below is information from Jerry.

"A unique opportunity to sail the Caribbean islands you've been hearing Jimmy Buffett sing and write about for years - Jost Van Dyke, Anguilla, Tortola, and more. Hangout at barefoot beach bars such as Foxyʼs, the Soggy Dollar, and Sunshineʼs. Feast on a cheeseburger in paradise as you people watch at the famous Le Select in St. Barts. All while enjoying live performances throughout the week from our own Barefoot Islands Cruise Band featuring Scott Nickerson, founding member of the first official Jimmy Buffet tribute band A1A, andJerry Diaz, Mark Mireles, and Bobby Summers of the popular trop rock band Hannaʼs Reef.".

"This exclusive full ship charter of the 312 passenger motor-sailing ship Wind Surf of Windstar Cruise Lines will have us island hopping the best of the Caribbean in luxury. The intimate size of this beautiful five-masted ship will allow us to visit the smaller, out-of-the-way islands not accessible to large cruise ships. We will be anchored off islands with our launches landing passengers at small docks or directly onto beaches. Our custom itinerary will allow us to stay at these anchorages most evenings so we can fully experience the legendary local night life and establishments. Clear blue waters, white sand beaches, and bountiful boat drinks - the ultimate attitude adjustment!"

We have a rare window of opportunity to secure the ship for this unique luxury small ship charter. We need to determine within one week if there are enough fans out there with serious interest in sailing with us. If you are definitely interested please email: kevin@localknowledgetravel.com  no later than Wednesday, September 7th.
